Medal of Honor Warfighter Review

Introduction

Electronic Arts & Danger Close (formerly Dreamworks Interactive) is back at it with Medal of Honorfranchise with their latest game Warfighter. The game is set in modern day and is a direct sequel to theMedal of Honor game released back in 2010. Since the game is not yet released until October 23th please take note this review is based solely off several hours playing the Xbox multi-player beta, but we believe this is enough experience to give an honest review of the game thus far. We were impressed and will get further into specific details below.

Medal of Honor Warfighter Review

Graphics

The graphics of this game are fairly impressive by utilizing the new Frostbite 2 engine which is a brand new engine used for the Medal of Honor series. We did feel as though the characters and gun detail was astounding, while the detail on the maps and textures were mediocre in comparison. We think there could have been more work put into the quality of the maps, but it was not a significant enough factor to have any affect on the game play.

Gameplay

The gameplay of this game is really where it shines. The way we can sum it up is that Warfighter is a mash up on Battlefield 3, Call of Duty, and Rainbow Six Vegas 2. The combination of the 3 is a fun and fast paced shooter that any Medal of Honor fan will enjoy. The guns are all fairly balanced besides the Snipers who honestly seem pretty underpowered are really tough to master due to this. We hope when the game launches, they will be strengthened in the official releaseIs it as addicting as Call of Duty? Honestly, no it isn’t. The gameplay is challenging and enjoyable, but it does not fill that void that was left after we stopped playing Modern Warfare 3. It is a great buffer game for us to have some fun with until the release of Black Ops 2.

Controls

The controls are very similar to that of the competing first person shooters such as Call of Duty so it is an easy adaptation for anyone who is looking to switch. Something we did like was that you can dive & crawl plus the option of extending a bipod on machine guns and sniper rifles. For those of you that have experienced sniping in the Call of Duty games then you will notice it is very similar with the option of holding your breath to ensure a steady shot. We did notice however that the sway of the sniper without holding your breath is extremely minimal compared to Call of Duty and realistically there is not a real need to hold your breath when sniping.

Multiplayer

For most of us, we are purchasing this game with the primary focus of enjoying the multi-player mode. Luckily, you will not be disappointed. The addition of “fireteams” is an awesome feature that makes team play satisfying and interesting. When you are put into a game you will be matched with another player whom will make up the other half of your fireteam. When you die or your teammate dies the option is given to spawn directly where your fireteam member currently resides or you can “fall back” and spawn away from the action. This was great in some instances, but faulty in others. This is because though you cannot spawn when your teammate is directly in the range of fire there was several instances where we spawned (on our fireteam) and were immediately taken out by a sniper or an opponent who was quickly coming around a corner. Your fireteam has the ability to heal and resupply each other which is necessary since you cannot pick up additional ammo or guns off dead opponents while out on the battlefield (like you can in Call of Duty). This promotes strong teamwork, but it was also frustrating since if there is an odd number of players you could get stuck without a fireteam thus forcing you to use a pistol if you run out of ammo in your primary weapon.
The kill streaks are fun to use and differ depending on the class of soldier you are using. They are each effective in their own way and mastering them is difficult, but fun. We did notice that the amount of kills needed to unlock each kill streak is minimal compared to Call of Duty which makes sense since the game play is so fast and challenging that racking up a high steak is not an easy task.
Since we are playing the beta there are some noticeable glitches here and there. For example, the kill feed that shows up on the side of the screen is not displaying in real time and it sometimes takes 10-20 seconds to see your kill or death show up in the feed. This was obnoxious at times since you cannot tell which or what your opponent used to kill you until the feed catches up with the action. Again, this is nothing that should cause you to shy away from this game as I am sure this issue will be worked out before the final release.
Do we recommend Medal of Honor Warfighter?

Yes, we think it is a fun and refreshing shooter that we will be playing to hold us over until Call of Duty Black Ops 2.
